Try this craft from Micha Archer, the illustrator of Lola’s Fandango, and make your very own Lola doll! This craft suggests using red and white materials to recreate Lola’s costume from the book, but feel free to get creative with your colors and patterns. Let your duende move you!

Illustrator Micha Archer teaches you how to create your very own Lola!

What to find:

  • 1 wooden bead
  • 1 button (a single-holed button works best)
  • 1 colorful cupcake liner
  • 2 pipe cleaners
  • Red felt
  • Black marker
  • 4 small red beads (optional)
  • Tissue paper (optional)

What to do:

  1. Cut out a small rectangle of red felt about 0.75″ x 0.25″ (2mm x .5mm). Fold one of the pipe cleaners in half and position the felt between the pipe cleaner halves, right at the bend.
  2. Slide the wooden bead up both pipe cleaner legs. Once the bead reaches the top of the bent pipe cleaner, it will squish the felt into a bow shape. The bow will also keep the bead from sliding off.
  3. Cut out another rectangle of felt, about 2″ x 1″ (4mm x 2mm). Wrap it around both pipe cleaner halves lengthwise, right under the bead. This will create the top of Lola’s dress. Using the second pipe cleaner, wrap the center of the pipe cleaner around the dress tightly to keep the felt in place. Pull the ends of the pipe cleaner straight to make Lola’s arms.
  4. Turn the cupcake liner upside down and poke Lola’s pipe cleaner legs through the center. Slide the liner up the pipe cleaner until it reaches the felt.
  5. Sliding a button up the legs and securing it right under the cupcake liner will help keep the skirt in place.
  6. Use the marker to draw Lola’s hair and face on the wooden bead. If you’d like, curl 4 small red beads onto Lola’s hands and feet, and make a folded paper fan from a small square of tissue paper!
