You can register to attend the webinar on November 5  at 8:00 pm ET by visiting this page.

Here are Barbara’s favorite ways to engage young children in story, and be sure to register for the webinar to learn lots more tips for bringing books to life!

Barbara sharing stories on Halloween

  1. Take your children on a storymaking adventure to collect characters for a story that you will “reveal” at your next story time. A routine trip to the market, post office or a walk in the park can be a source for all kinds of “magical” characters (squirrels, grocery carts, blowing leaves, man on the street, etc.) who are just waiting to come alive in your next story!
  2. Ask your children to choose a book, stuffed animal or special toy to bring to a “storytelling tent” or other creative space where you can read and then re-create the story using these treasures. I use a laptop to document and help guide the tale to incorporate and help the children learn essential ingredients of story.
  3. Create a storytelling “Kit” that can be portable for travel or for carrying from room to room to “catch” and document a story whenever the opportunity arises.  Clean pizza boxes can be painted and decorated for this purpose and filled with zip lock bags of markers, crayons, colored pencils, stickers and a pad of paper. You’ll never be at a loss for a new story to create, illustrate and share!

What is your best tip for engaging young children in a story? Do you have any questions for the storytelling pros? Let us know by sharing a comment and we’ll try and share it or have your question answered during the webinar.
