Today’s podcast comes from the tale that inspired Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” Nora is grumpy and lazy, but the woodsman Jamie wants to marry her because he needs a wife whose strong spirit could stand up to the water demon, the Nicky Nicky Nye, who lives nearby.  Nora can handle Jamie’s tricks, but can she take on the Nicky Nicky Nye? Tune in to find out if she can endure the Nicky Nicky Nye’s torments, or if she gets gobbled up!

The Nicky Nicky Nye in “The Devil’s Bet” is a Gwent water spirit from Welsh folklore. What mythical creature gives you the creeps? Comment below, and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a copy of Shakespeare’s Storybook! The contest closes 30 October at midnight EST and 31 October at 5am GMT.

Here are some fun facts from the story’s background:

  • It was inspired by Irish, Welsh and English tales.
  • The main theme of the story is that kind words and a gentle touch work better than mean tricks.
  • Shakespeare believed the best marriages had evenly matched partners.
  • His play, The Taming of the Shrew, was adapted as a musical entitled Kiss me, Kate in 1948. The play, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, won the first ever Tony Award for best musical in 1949.
