Staring into the eyes of a dragonfly, spotting a bullfrog camouflaged by browning leaves on the ground, counting the dots on the wings of a ladybug – these are some fond memories from childhood that pop into my mind when summer comes round. Here are some ways our Barefoot families like to spend the summer months.

  • Go on a family camping trip! If time is limited, camp out in the backyard.
  • Take a walk after dinner and enjoy the late evening light.
  • Go fishing. Even if no fish bite, the art and science of trying to catch a fish teaches patience and focus to little fishermen and women!
  • Put together a family ball game at a nearby park.
  • Volunteer at a local farm.
  • Go on a picnic!
  • Dip in and explore the ocean. Quietly observing what’s underwater may lead to an exciting discovery of little sea creatures!
  • Stargaze on a clear night. Observe the patterns and pictures that the stars make up.
  • Bird-watch and sketch subjects in nature that are inspiring.

What are some of the outdoor pursuits that your family most enjoys in summertime?
