Today’s podcast is a retelling of a classic folk tale from our anthology collection Storytime. In “The Cock, the Mouse and the Little Red Hen,” the cock and the mouse come to appreciate how much their friend the hen does for them. When a crafty fox tries to make three friends his dinner, it will take the hen’s quick thinking and the help of the cock and the mouse to escape. Tune in to see what cunning plan the hen devises for their escape, and read on for a chance to win!

In this story, the little red hen is always prepared with her scissors, needle and thread. What is something you never forget to leave the house with? Leave a comment below and you’ll be entered to win a copy of Storytime. The contest closes June 19 at midnight EST and June 20 at 5am GMT.

Here are some fun facts about the animals featured in this story:

  • Roosters will crow at any time of day, not just first thing in the morning.
  • There are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird.
  • Chickens were considered exotic animals in ancient Greece.
  • Foxes are omnivores that eat a variety of foods, including fruit and berries.
  • Mice are nocturnal. No wonder the mouse in the story slept all day!
